Our methodology · How we test

How we review project management tools

A review is only as trustworthy as the process behind it. Too many “best tool” lists read like thinly-disguised ads — so we do the opposite. Here’s exactly how we test, score, and rank every tool on this site, in plain English.

No paid rankings · Same test, every tool
What we stand by

Four principles behind every review

Hands-on, always

We don’t review from press releases. We create accounts, build real projects, and click every button before we write a single word.

Independent by design

Rankings are earned, never bought. No vendor can pay for a better score or a higher spot on a list. Ever.

Transparent scoring

Every tool is judged against the same fixed criteria, so comparisons are fair and consistent — not just vibes.

Kept up to date

Software moves fast. We revisit our reviews as tools ship new features, change pricing, or shift direction.

What we evaluate

The same six-part test for every tool

Every tool faces the same checklist. Here’s what we’re actually looking at.

Features & depth

Does it actually do what it claims — and how well? We dig past the marketing into real, day-to-day capability.

Ease of use

How quickly can a new team get productive without a manual? Onboarding and everyday friction matter a lot.

Value for money

We weigh what you get against what you pay — including the gotchas hidden in the higher pricing tiers.

Integrations

How well it plays with the tools you already use — Slack, Google Workspace, GitHub, your CRM, and more.

Support & docs

When something breaks, can you get help? We test documentation, response times, and the community.

Scalability

Does it still hold up when your team — and your projects — get bigger, busier, and a little messier?

The process

How a review actually happens

No shortcuts. Every review follows the same five steps.

1

We sign up like a real user

Free trials, real accounts, real card details where needed — never a polished vendor demo. We want the same experience you’d get.

2

We run real work through it

We build actual projects, assign tasks, set deadlines, and use the tool the way your team would over a normal week.

3

We score against fixed criteria

Every tool faces the same checklist, so a score means the same thing from one review to the next. No moving goalposts.

4

We write it honestly

Strengths and weaknesses, both. If something’s frustrating or overpriced, we say so — even for tools we genuinely like.

5

We re-test and update

We come back as tools evolve, and mark each review with when it was last checked — so you’re never reading stale advice.

Why you can trust our rankings

Independence isn’t a tagline for us — it’s the entire point of this site. We never accept payment in exchange for a positive review or a higher ranking. We do use affiliate links to keep our content free, but they never influence our scores or who we recommend, and we’ll happily call out a product’s weaknesses even when we have an affiliate relationship with it.

You can read exactly how that works in our Affiliate Disclosure.
